What is Botox®?
Botox®, along with Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Dysport®, are injectable cosmetics that have been approved by the FDA to correct a variety of beauty concerns. These products are classified as neuromodulators, meaning that they work by inhibiting the activity of certain neurotransmitters. Neuromodulator drugs were first used clinically in the treatment of muscular disorders. They work by relaxing target muscles for extended periods of time. In fact, the beauty products that we know so well today were first discovered as a happy little accident! Patients who were being treated for muscular disorders like blepharospasm, uncontrollable eye twitching, noticed that the wrinkles around the eyes started to go away. From this discovery came years of clinical studies, all of which determined that the controlled use of the botulinum toxin in localized areas could rejuvenate the face.
Who is a Candidate for Botox?
Most adults who want to ward off the onset of dynamic wrinkles a little longer or who desire subtle facial rejuvenation can be great candidates for Botox or another neuromodulator. The risks and side effects of this type of medication are very low. Some people may have an allergy to the active ingredients in neuromodulators. In most instances, allergies show up mildly and can be easily managed with proper medical care. What are the Benefits of Botox?
We can understand why Botox®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Dysport® are such popular treatments. They provide a convenient way to restore more youthful, natural beauty! Treatment takes just a few minutes. Even with your consultation, you can expect to be in and out of the office in an hour or less. The treatment is also comfortable. Injectable treatments are done with a very small needle that you should barely feel as it passes into the superficial muscle we’re targeting for relaxation. This procedure, done with meticulous injection techniques, is not painful and doesn’t require any anesthetic.
After your treatment, you can return to most of your normal activities immediately with very subtle side effects. You may notice some redness and puffiness in the treatment area, but these side effects usually subside within a few hours. A little makeup can make them all but disappear. There’s no real downtime to recover from Botox injections, just minor restrictions like avoiding rubbing the area, strenuous physical activity that raises your heart rate, and lying down. These restrictions prevent the accidental spread of the drug to unintended areas.

What Does Botox Treat?
As a neuromodulator that works by relaxing muscle movements, Botox® is commonly used to reduce the appearance of what are called dynamic wrinkles. As the muscles become tense with repeated use and the skin loses collagen and elastin, though, the lines become permanent. When Will I see the Results from My Botox?
After your injections are done, the product gets absorbed by the target muscles. It immediately begins to inhibit the action of the neurotransmitter associated with muscle contractions. You may notice over several days that it becomes more difficult to fully contract the muscles we’ve treated. You can also expect your rejuvenating benefits to appear gradually over four to seven days. At that time, the muscles have relaxed for long enough to allow the overlying skin to smooth out.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Neuromodulator treatments usually produce results that last about three to four months. Some people enjoy longer-lasting improvements, or simply notice the return of their lines occurs more slowly. You can schedule touch-up treatments as often as every three months. This way, you can get ahead of wrinkle recurrence before the problem shows up on your skin!
